We had a long collaborative history with Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong. Back in 2002, we already helped furnish their business centre with an assortment of our standard and bespoke Chinese furniture pieces, including coffee table, horseshoe armchairs and side tables. Our work with them deepened starting from 2010, when we are involved with their fine restaurants one after the other, including the Pierre, Man Wah, Mandarin Grill + Bar, and the exquisite Krug Room.
The Krug Room is their cosy small restaurant right next to the kitchen, created in partnership with the House of Krug. One may wonder who is the main character of the show, whether it is the creative cuisine or one of the world's most prestigious Champagnes. The original chairs there looked good, but were deemed too fragile and not comfortable enough for prolonged seating. We started from scratch, trying to create a form that not only solves these two problems, but one that possesses a form inspired by Champagne. The result is a high armchair that bears a back silhouette resembling the graceful waist line of a Champagne bottle. The design goes well with the mood of the original Krug room (as seen in the photos), and even the recently refurnished mood as a train carriage.
For the other restaurants, our major works are the trolleys, as well as the associating side tables and handbag tables. Worth special mention are the Champagne and beverage trolleys, which greatly enhance the guests' dining experience. Each of these trolleys, despite having similar functions, bear a distinctive style designed to suit the mood of each restaurant. The superb structural integrity of our solid wood construction enables the trolleys to bear the significant weight of all the wines and ice combined. The highlight achieved by all the chrome metal parts is genuine silver plating over solid brass.
Typical modern high chairs tend to be minimal in look and do not have armrests. The Krug Room chairs we designed however have a different mission - it needs to provide a sturdy support for the guests, especially when rounds of wines have been consumed.
Almost all wooden furniture used in the commercial world is made by using stapler guns, connecting plywood and to a much lesser degree ordinary solid wood components. Visualise how we offer furniture that can't be more different, from the choice of materials to structural design to the final crafting, all through an artisan mind rather than a contractor mind.
